STROKE AWARENESS 2008

Both Woking Rotary Clubs joined forces with St. John Ambulance and organised a Stroke Awareness Day in Woking Town Centre on Saturday 19th April. It was a bitterly cold day but once again everyone put in a great effort and 286 blood pressure readings were taken. This was only half the number taken in 2007 when the weather was a great deal warmer and more people were ‘out and about’. However, for the 33 people who had high enough readings to be asked to report to their doctors and for the lady who was sent direct to hospital, it was again a very worthwhile event.

As in past years, we were grateful to the St. John Ambulance Service for the use of the mobile unit and the team of nurses who spent the day taking readings.

This year we invited the Anti Smoking Campaign representatives to join us for, as we all know, smoking can be
a contributory cause of strokes.

As many people who came to have readings taken had been last year, it is apparent that the day is worth repeating. Hopefully, we will be holding another Stroke Awareness Day on April 18th 2009.
