KIDS OUT 2008

The Rotary club of Woking and eleven other Rotary clubs held their 19th Kids Out day at The Army Rugby Football Stadium, Queens Road, Aldershot on Wednesday 11th June, entertaining approximately 875 children from twenty-one local schools. The Commanding Officer of the Aldershot Garrison is to be thanked for his wonderful hospitality in providing the Rugby Stadium for the event.

The event is held under the auspices of Kids Out, a national charity, which provides days of fun and happiness for special children across the country, the Rotary day being held always on the second Wednesday of June each year.

Many Rotarians, their partners, the ladies of several local Inner Wheel Clubs, friends, the children’s school teachers, carers and parents swelled the numbers on the day to nearly 2,000, with excellent weather conditions, sunny but not too hot, and all were entertained by clowns, a disco, face painting, bouncy castles, roundabouts and slides, puppet shows, friendly farm animals and many other side shows and events accompanied by copious quantities of sandwiches and fresh fruit, hot dogs and beef burgers, fruit juices and not forgetting the ice-creams!

The event culminated in the release of the balloons. Nigel Butt, one of the organising committee said “Let us hope that this year’s balloon goes further than last year’s winner, which landed in Ipswich!”

Around 2.00 pm, the children were on their way back to school clutching their newly acquired Disney back packs whilst the army of Rotarians, helpers and carers finally made their weary way home but exhilarated by the fun and enjoyment they had provided to many children for whom it was a very special and happy day in their lives.

Finally, also a big thank you from the organising committee to the Police and Fire Services for also entertaining the children (and some of the adults) and to St John Ambulance, on hand to keep us all hail and hearty!
