YOUNG ENGINEER OF THE YEAR
In September 2007 the Principal of Woking College was approached and
asked if
the college and students would be interested in taking
part in a science or engineering project sponsored by the Rotary Club
of
Woking.
Martin Ingram the Principal was enthusiastic, but the problem of
persuading
the students to take part fell to Lynn Stott the
Head of Department for Science. She set her Electronic Engineering
students
a challenge and the student responded with enthusiasm.
Many of the students at this level choose a circuit that someone else
has
designed but the eventual winner Daniel Searle designed
and built his own system for the basis of an Electronic Combination
Lock.
The projects were judged by Mr Brian Stratford of the University of
Surrey.
He commented "My decision is that the Rotary Club of
Woking Award should go to Daniel Searle for his 'combination lock'. Mr
Stratford was impressed enough with two other entries to
offer a second prize, funded by the University to be shared between
Jonathon
Nash and Alistair Beddow both of whom built quiz referees.
