This is the traditional well known face of Rotary which channels the Club’s help and assistance to the aged, the handicapped, the infirm, young people and others in need in our local community. The committee also promotes Rotary youth education and training initiatives in local schools and colleges, and maintains close links with the local Rotaract club (for 18-30 year olds).

January 2012

In December last the Club contributed to the Kids Out, Toybox Scheme which addresses some of the issues for children who have had to leave the family home with a parent as a result of domestic violence.

The Club has given a grant to Woking Explorer Scouts to assist members to participate in the Icelandic International Centenary Jamboree in July 2012.

On 27th January 2012 our Club President, Graham Fageance, presented Oxford Junior Dictionaries to each of the 18 children in the reception class at Park School, Woking.

The Club acknowledges the assistance of local charity, Lets' Read, in sourcing the dictionaries.

Preparations are at an advanced stage for Rotary's Stroke Awareness Day which will take place in Woking town centre on Saturday 14th April. This annual event provides the public with a convenient opportunity to have their blood pressure checked by health professionals while doing their Saturday shopping.

The Club is working jointly with the Rotary Club of Woking District to select and sponsor 2 students to take part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Scheme which will take place in the New Forest over the weekend of Friday 4th May to Monday 7th May 2012.

November 2011

Members of the Club have been assisting St John the Baptist School with their sixth form mock interviews this autumn. The next session of mock interviews will be held on Wednesday 30th November when members will join interview panels in order to give students the experience and confidence to deal with interview panels as they move on to higher education and the workplace.

The Club has actively supported the local charity, Let's Read, over several years both with funds and the donation of dictionaries to local schools and has recently made a further grant to the charity.

The Club is providing 14 tickets for the pantomime at the Woking Victoria Theatre to members of the Cornerhouse charity based in Woking. The tickets are for the performance on Thursday 12th January 2012.

The Vocational and Community Committee of the Club is planning Vocational Visits for Club members to Surrey Police HQ to take place in March 2012 and to Denbie's Winery in the early summer 2012.

Mike Tinling

Community & Vocational Chairman

Mike is a (soon to be retired) corporate lawyer based in Woking . He is a past President of the Club and served on the Vocational, Community and Youth Committee for several years before becoming chairman in 2010. Mike is keen to expand and develop the community projects which his committee has traditionally supported and this year hopes to participate in Rotary Spring Clean Day on 23 February 2012 (a new initiative) with a suitable community project. In addition, Mike is keen to involve more local young people in Rotary sponsored events.
